my Avatar 3D glasses. I am keeping them as some sort of keepsake. I feel like Avatar is epic, star wars style. One day maybe I can be like, “hey kids check out my ORIGINAL Avatar 3D glasses!” and they’ll be like, “aw mom, you had to wear THESE crazy things to see a movie in 3D?! Old school.”

Oh and I loved the movie too.

New planners

I am overly picky when it comes to planners and calendars, and I was perfectly content to stick with the one I’ve used for the last 18 months because it was perfect in every way. Sadly, I could not find refills or the whole planner anywhere. I think the company discontinued this line. So my search for a new planner was on. Several things are important to me: weekly, lots of writing space, durability, not spiral bound, color, reasonable price, and a medium size. I searched many stores and websites. I was disappointed in the selection on etsy. I finally stumbled upon what I hope will be a winner:

2010 Ecosystem 12-Month Weekly Planner

I hope it is as great when it arrives!

The ugliest powerpoint slide I’ve seen lately

All I could think about in class was, “man that’s and ugly slide.” The color, font, clipart…yuck.

Trivia and Star Wars

Posted: December 10th, 2009 | Author: hannah | Filed under: Trivia | No Comments »

If you know me, you know I love trivia. My roommate and I have been going to trivia at my favorite neighborhood bar, the Wedgwood Alehouse, on Sunday nights. Usually a couple of other friends join us too. The questions are pretty tough, but the Alehouse is a great bar and it’s only a 5 minute walk from our house. Obviously an easy choice for my local trivia haunt (or pub quiz as they like to call it in these parts). There are 25 questions, no categories, and one audio question. The questions are pretty all over the place, but are often related to obscure 80s/early 90s movies and politics. Last week we managed to get third place! The Prizes are fantastic — hot wheels, gummy worms, random stuff. First place gets a pitcher of beer. For third place last week we won gummy worms and a set of fancy toothpicks in a fabulous harvest themed container!

Anyway, a few weeks ago there was a Star Wars question: What was the sand people’s beast of burden? We could see the beast of burden in our heads and even make the noises. As soon as the trivia announcer (Bob, for the record) said the answer, Banthas, Casey screamed BANTHAS! with her fists in the air, since it was on the tippiest of the tip of her tounge. Bob was kind enough to give us a bag of gummy worms for best reaction to an answer. :)

BANTHA!

BANTHA!

The Banthas question inspried Casey and I to rewatch Star Wars! They were on my Netflix queue anyway because I’ve been watching How I Met Your Mother a lot lately, and they have tons of Star Wars references. I pushed them up to the top of my queue and we watched A New Hope last week and tonight watched Empire Strikes Back. I forgot how much I enjoy those movies, and how timeless they are. Casey and I both agreed that they make us laugh a lot more than we remembered. We’ll be watching Return of the Jedi soon! Can’t wait.

Here are some of the other questions we’ve (that I can remember) had at the Wedgwood Alehouse. A lot of them are tip of the tongue sort of questions…

What is the name of the dog grooming company in Dumb and Dumber?
In Seinfeld, what is Kramer’s first name? (A regular question, we’ve had it twice)
What is the name of the college in Animal House?
What is John Belushi’s nickname in Animal House?
Who was the coach of the 1992 Dream Team?
How many people died in the Challenger explosion?
What city is Jack Daniel’s distilled?
What song did the term “heavy metal” come from?

Our scores have been variable (out of 25):
Week 1: 10
Week 2: 12
Week 3: 10
Week 4: 17! third place

One of the interesting rules at the Alehouse, and different from Sammy’s, is a player cap. You are docked one point from your final score for every person over 6 you have on your team.

Though I miss good ole Sammy’s, I’m happy I’ve found a new trivia home!

Brrrrr

5-day Seattle forecast. Apparently when it doesn’t rain in the winter, it’s FREEZING.

Today was cold and frosty, and there was a lot of ice on the sidewalks. I realized how slippery it was, and took extra care and caution while I was walking. Despite my extreme caution, I still managed to have a nice wipeout! At least I landed on my knees and not my butt. I got a nice scrape and bruise. My knees are pretty tough, and I think will just be perpetually skinned and bruised judging from the grace I’ve demonstrated over the past six months. Broken foot, falls on crutches, random trips, ice slips…did you know that “Hannah” is derived from Herbrew meaning “grace of god?” That’s me!

Go Huskies!

One of my great new Seattle friends texted me last night saying he had an extra ticket to the UW – Cal game today. It was the last game of the season so I was super pumped to get a chance to go to a game this season. It was a great game, Huskies really stepped it up, played great defense, and Cal wasn’t doing so hot. Ended up with a 42 – 10 Husky win! Husky stadium is beautiful too, overlooking Lake Washington (I think, there are too many lakes around here) and you have an amazing view of the Cascades. It was a great day for football too — COLD but clear and sunny. It made me realize how much I missed football. And although I found it easy to root for UW, it made me really miss my Wolfpack!

Third Place Books

Wow, I’ve been all about the book posts lately.

Today was a beautiful day in Seattle. Sunny and just the right fall temperature for a great walk. So I walked on down to Third Place Books in Ravenna. It’s about a 40 minute walk from my house. I could have taken the bus, but I would not have been able to take these great pictures on the bus:

Sunshine! The gray hasn't bothered me yet, but I do notice I appreciate the bright sun when it makes an appearance! It was a beautiful fall day.

There is an apartment complex nearby called Raleigh Court!

Third Place Books is a great bookstore, with used and new books. There is also a coffee shop AND bar. What more does one need?

I spent a good deal of time perusin’ and cruisin’ and finally settled on three purchases:

  • The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck Only $1.99 because it seems to have been used by several students and is full of notes. I love worn in books.
  • Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver I read this when it first came out when I was in eighth grade and loved it then. It was pretty sophisticated, I think, for a 13 or 14 year old, so I’m interested to see how I will enjoy it now and how my perspective has changed. I remember it being extremely well-written, romantic, and focusing on nature. I remember it feeling like a LONG book back then and now it feels normal.
  • The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon Upon the recommendation of Maggie!
