Go Huskies!

One of my great new Seattle friends texted me last night saying he had an extra ticket to the UW – Cal game today. It was the last game of the season so I was super pumped to get a chance to go to a game this season. It was a great game, Huskies really stepped it up, played great defense, and Cal wasn’t doing so hot. Ended up with a 42 – 10 Husky win! Husky stadium is beautiful too, overlooking Lake Washington (I think, there are too many lakes around here) and you have an amazing view of the Cascades. It was a great day for football too — COLD but clear and sunny. It made me realize how much I missed football. And although I found it easy to root for UW, it made me really miss my Wolfpack!

Hmm. Now what?

Well, I guess I should make graduation aimp official! Last Saturday was the big day! I am officially an NCSU alum, although my unity id/library login still work so I guess it’s not truly official (how much nerd status does it win me that I actually used ebsco host after graduation? oh well.) Graduation was fantastic. We’ll forget the part where I stood up at the wrong time to announce scholars graduates, whoops, and instead think about the lovely speech my adviser gave. He even quoted Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler!!!

“Some days you must learn a great deal. But you should also have days when you allow what is already in you to swell up and touch everything. If you never let that happen, then you just accumulate facts, and they begin to rattle around inside of you.”

I was surprised when they lined us up to find out that I got to sit with all of the people in my major (I thought we would be lined up by department for some reason). All seven of us! My best natural resource buddies! UFAT! (urban forest assessment team). It was fantastic. I couldn’t have asked for a better graduation. And then me and davis took an awesome bro/sis pic (which, luckily, worked out to be a great mother’s day present. totally planned it):

graduation-023

So now I’m just chillin. I don’t really know what to do with myself. I’m working of course, but this is the first summer I haven’t had any classes. I’m gonna try to read my books and get in good enough shape to ride a bike more than halfway up Conifer. And most importantly I’m gonna get ready to move to Seattle. AHH! It still hasn’t hit me yet…AHH! :) I have chosen a couple of classes to take. Forest Community Ecology (super excited to take this because I wanted to take this at ncsu, but it overlapped with a requirement. hopefully it will help me learn my northwest trees! cause i def don’t remember them from dendro…whoops!), natural resource policy and planning, college of forest resources graduate orientation seminar, and probably grad statistics (EEK!). I still need to figure out how I’m getting out there, how i’m paying for it, and where i’m living. small details right? all in all the adventure excites me. i’ll keep ya posted!!!

A Technician Portfolio

You may or may not know that the Technician finds me oh so quoteable! Actually, I think it’s more like easily-accessible with no problem voicing my opinion. To pay homage to my lovely years of Technician quoting, I bring you my Technician portfolio:

It all began with the love of a sloth…
She said she sees the museum as an integral step toward ensuring environmental consciousness and believes that coming face-to-face with nature will have a greater impact on people than simply reading about it.
[ Hanging out with a three-toed sloth, Sept 2007 ]

And then I was a “green expert”
According to Litzenberger, it’s important for people to recycle not only bottles and cans but also cardboard and white paper.
[ Going green begins with baby steps, October 2007 ]

And then I liked @BarackObama
“I saw one of my other friends was following him on Twitter and I was like, Whoa, Barack Obama has a Twitter — that’s awesome,”
[ @BarackObama, where did all your tweets go?, Jan 2009 ]

And then I was a Gmail proponent…
“G Chat would be a great tool to connect everyone – even students to faculty.”
[ It's Gmail, March 2009 ]

And then a journalistic expert…
“It’s fair to charge Google or other AP content users, but I would imagine Google would just find news content elsewhere,” she said. “It doesn’t seem like the AP has a strong hold on the news media like it used to since there is some much news information available on the Internet. The availability of free news, content, and information on the Internet makes all this stuff so tricky.”
[ AP sends out battle cry to protect content, April 2009 ]

So, Hannah, a senior in natural resources, will msorely miss the Technician. Maybe I will graduate to the News and Observer? *Fingers Crossed!*

What a beautiful day.

It’s so pretty right now. It’s making it much easier to readjust to non-spring break life.

New Qualification for Future Husband: Must enjoy Vegas.

Posted: December 7th, 2008 | Author: hannah | Filed under: Good Times | No Comments »

I just got back from Las Vegas last night…wow, what a place! I was only there for two days, but it was a ridiculous two days. Vegas is the most over the top place I’ve ever experienced, and of course I embraced this and enjoyed every second of that ridiculous place! Friday night we went to see Cirque du Soleil “O.” We had second row seats…wow, it was incredible. There was a giant swimming pool on stage, which would suddenly turn into just a normal stage. It really blew my mind. Then Friday night we got front row seats for the Blue Man Group. WOW. I’ve always wanted to see the Blue Men, and front row just makes it ten times better. You have to wear a poncho! So awesome.

Vegas highlights:
- Watching the national rodeo championship at Toby Keith’s I Love this Bar, drinking beer out of mason jars, and my dad chatting up the cowboys around us.
- Sitting in the casino until 3am, losing money, enjoying free drinks!
- Texting people waay too much (sorry about that guys…)
- Crazy hotels. Beautiful Casinos. Sensory Overload!

Emily and I are getting ready now for an animal-themed costume party! Everyone’s dressing as animals, and the word is that every room will be a different ecosystem! I’m really excited, I hope it’s fun. I am a ladybug and Emily is a frog. Our costumes are great! I’m hoping there will be pictures. :)

Also, I’m really glad I looked at my layout on Emily’s computer in Firefox. I’ve been using IE on my dad’s computer, and haven’t looked at in Firefox. Why didn’t anyone tell me the navigation is over the birdy! It looks a lot better in IE! I’ll fix that tomorrow.
