Blue skies at night

There is an interesting transition period between sunset and full nighttime in Seattle. There is this period where it’s dark out, but the sky is still blue. It’s a little spooky.

By the way, this is “Red Square” on UW campus Just like the Brickyard. I often catch myself calling it the brickyard and people don’t know what the heck I’m talking about. And it is even more slippery than the brickyard on rainy days.

Third Place Books

Wow, I’ve been all about the book posts lately.

Today was a beautiful day in Seattle. Sunny and just the right fall temperature for a great walk. So I walked on down to Third Place Books in Ravenna. It’s about a 40 minute walk from my house. I could have taken the bus, but I would not have been able to take these great pictures on the bus:

Sunshine! The gray hasn't bothered me yet, but I do notice I appreciate the bright sun when it makes an appearance! It was a beautiful fall day.

There is an apartment complex nearby called Raleigh Court!

Third Place Books is a great bookstore, with used and new books. There is also a coffee shop AND bar. What more does one need?

I spent a good deal of time perusin’ and cruisin’ and finally settled on three purchases:

  • The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck Only $1.99 because it seems to have been used by several students and is full of notes. I love worn in books.
  • Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver I read this when it first came out when I was in eighth grade and loved it then. It was pretty sophisticated, I think, for a 13 or 14 year old, so I’m interested to see how I will enjoy it now and how my perspective has changed. I remember it being extremely well-written, romantic, and focusing on nature. I remember it feeling like a LONG book back then and now it feels normal.
  • The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon Upon the recommendation of Maggie!

    Some favorite Seattle places

I’ve been completely neglecting blog writing. So far my Seattle experience has been one great adventure. I am making wonderful friends, having old friends visit, and learning a lot about myself (and in school, of course!).

I am quickly finding my way in Seattle, and getting a feel for some of my favorite places, so I decided I would compile them into a series of entries. Seattle is packed with locally owned businesses and there is always a new place to try, which I love. We’ll start with the obvious choice for Seattle, coffee shops!

There are so many great coffee shops in Seattle, all with so much character. I’ve been to tons and love them all, but here are a couple of my favorites.

    Cafe Van Gogh
This is about a 5 minute walk from my house. Their latte foam is to die for. And they have delicious food too! I love to study here since it is cozy and there are recreations of Van Gogh paintings all over the walls.

    Cloud City Coffee

This is Sara’s favorite coffee shop in Seattle, so she brought me here twice! I had their Chai both times, and both times it was great. Their bacon, spinach, and feta quiche is incredible.

    Top Pot
Ohhh Top Pot! Top Pot is a short bike ride from my house, and offers delectable doughnuts and coffee. I really like to study here since the seating area walls are full floor to ceiling with books. The old-fashioned cinnamon sugar doughnut dipped in a good cup of black coffee sure does get my studying done. ;)

    Mr. Spot’s Chai House
I found this place on one of my Ballard adventures. I love Ballard! I found Mr. Spot’s when I went to get stuff for my Halloween costume, and had some homework to do. I happened upon Mr. Spot’s and had the best chai tea I’ve ever had. Spicy and delicious! I want to go back on a night where they’ve got some live music!

Stay tuned for places, stores, bars…and who knows what else!

    Seattle Fanatic

I’m flying out to Seattle on September 10. Ahh! I can’t believe it. My dad is flying out with me to help me settle in at my new place. Additionally, we’re planning a Seattle sports extravaganza:

September 12: UW vs. Idaho (football)
September 13: Seattle Seahawks vs. St. Louis Rams (Game 1 of the Season)
September 15: Seattle Mariners vs. Chicago White Sox

Getting my Seattle sports pride started off right! However, the Wolfpack, Panthers, Hurricanes, and Braves will always hold a special place in my heart.
